The JOURNEY of BELONGING
THE JOURNEY OF BELONGING
I like so many people am a product of so many small moments and memories. Each interaction, each conversation, each experience good and bad has propelled me forward and shaped who I am today.
It’s the fortunate, unfortunate, and eclectic moments that paint what resembles a mosaic of my life. I choose to examine this mosaic through the POV of my lens. My camera allows me to share my perspective, the perspective of others and the unfolding of life and all its idiosyncrasies on a screen.
I truly believe that above all else we as humans are interconnected. We as people have shared values and a longing to attain our dreams and goals even if they seem elusive. For me life is about finding the joy, finding the hustle that’s worth the sleepless nights and finding the revelation that has the power to unlock a door for another person.
As a filmmaker whether through script or film, I am able to find these moments, explore their impact not only on me but on humanity, and share themes moments with a larger audience.
It is a gift to be able to observe the world around me, and as a filmmaker to place these moments in a larger social, political and cultural framework.
When you begin your journey as a filmmaker, you often ask yourself do I belong? Questions like will my voice be heard, does my story matter and will someone believe that I belong in this space tend to circulate and ruminate in your thoughts. However, the question to answer is not if you belong. You belong! Unlike Granny’s famous and to die for pie, there is no one secret recipe that produces a filmmaker to envy. There are however unique experiences, an encounter with the Divine, moments only you can re-tell that begin to define your voice and your aesthetic as a filmmaker.
I can tell you that your voice matters, but deep down you have to truly believe that no one is you, and your are not a copy of someone else. Your place is defined by you taking up space, and that space will be carved out when you take the first step to create.
