Ready.Set.Go!

I am ready, I am set, I can now take my wings and go! “Ready, set, go!”, is a proverbial phrase ingrained in our minds from adolescence to adulthood. This phrase can be heard all across the world.

It’s the prep phrase before you’re about to embark on something invigorating, maybe even victorious. Thinking about it from the perspective of a film career, I am inserting my two cents to say that you need a mantra like this one. Maybe even two! A valiant cry that leads you into a bountiful unknown.

There are so many paths, and so many twists and turns on this journey upward. And I am aware that as you are reading this you are asking for me to give you something more tangible, something more concrete. A how-to perhaps or a breakdown of the dos and don’ts of starting out. You’re right to ask of these things, and to the best of my ability I will share.

However, first I ask you to just take stock of where you are in this moment. Where are you situated, and what has brought you to here as you pursue such a ‘lofty’ career? Why are you here, and why now? Once you ponder these questions, then I want you to write down the answers. First, spell it out for yourself and even put the answers on something you can save for later. A reminder of sorts later down the road. That encouragement and answer to the why will fuel you when you find yourself knee-deep in your passion project tirelessly reviewing dailies, revising your direction on set, and leading meetings with producers you are accountable to. That reminder of your initial fearless faith will carry you through more than you can ever imagine.
